Many recording studios are built using ‘room within a room’ construction. Get a rectangular cylinder block warehouse and build the studio within it resulting in a windowless audio submarine. There are great studios that are built this way and they certainly have some advantages but I wanted something unique especially in the Spokane area which boasts some amazing turn of the century structures. After playing as a performer in this great sounding space back when it was the Iron Goat Brewery, I knew it had the potential of being a unique and amazing recording studio/event space. In the fall of 2015 I heard that Iron Goat was moving to a bigger location so I purchased the property.
It took nearly 3 years of major construction to build out 1 control room, 2 tracking rooms, 3 bathrooms, 1 kitchen and conversion of 2 storage containers into a stage and bar. The control room was built to a ratio in the Bolt Area, a BBC standard of retrofitting studios into pre-existing spaces. Because of the post-war boom in recording, the BBC had to retrofit old buildings in London as recording studios that needed to have predictable frequency responses. Rooms for music rehearsal, sound studios, control rooms, etc., need a smooth frequency response. For that reason, the frequencies of the room modes should be spread as well as possible, and this is controlled by the aspect ratios of the dimensions. This results in a room that is an accurate listening space for mixing.
The spacious 30’ x 40’ Live Room features exposed brick walls which make for lots of natural sounding diffusion. All the walls are non-parallel making this one of the best sounding spaces in Spokane in a part of town that is quiet but you can get loud without disturbing anyone. On the other side of the mix room is another tracking/overdub room with a clear line of site into the mix and live room. This room is the opposite of the live room’s airy and diffuse nature in that it is dry and intimate. Perfect for vocal overdubs, voice over, any acoustic instrument, horns, percussion and dry punchy drums. A 5,000 sq. ft. Musicland with many opportunities for creative mic techniques.
Years of working with some of the best audio professionals and artists have given me the experience and knowledge to achieve what you have in mind for your song, album project, voice over or ADR session.
